Fence zijn de Rewind Productions van 1998, want ze haalden in dat jaar zilver in Humo’s Rock Rally. We staken hun nieuwe ‘The Winding’ met een bang hartje in de cd-speler, gewoon omdat we dachten: ‘Even straf als viersterrenvoorganger ‘Fence’ gaat het niet worden. Maar al van bij de vermoeide, oude robot-stem die vraagt ‘Have you ever been in love?’ en zeker vanaf de echte opener ‘The Winding’ wordt onze twijfel getorpedeerd.'

Fence songs are never linear. The winding, indeed. Drift in and out of fragments. Takes a deceptive while to figure out. Here grooves run free. At times the rhythm section find themselves on a tightrope with no recollection how they got there. A good place.

On this fifth album, the band shows it strong side. In the eleven songs, you hear all kinds of influences (according to Fence, from George Clinton to Wayne Coyne) and that adorns the band. For people who like to think in boxes, Fence is probably a nightmare, but it's a gift for music fans who love adventure!
